Day Trips from Mozambique

Maputo's island reserve lets you slip into the sea ten steps from the high-tide mark, follow trails through one of the last dune forests on the coast, and watch researchers fit satellite tags to loggerheads. The leap from downtown gridlock to Inhaca's empty arc of sand is half the thrill.

Pair Maputo's southern beaches with a bay crossing. Eat char-grilled linefish at Costa do Sol, then ride the 15-minute ferry to Catembe for cold beers while the city skyline glows pink.

A ribbon of sand with Atlantic breakers on one flank and a mirror-calm lagoon on the other. The final stretch needs a hand-poled ferry across a tidal river, adding a splash of adventure to a day of doing absolutely nothing.

Think of it as Mozambique's private infinity pool: a lagoon the size of a town that stays waist-deep for hundreds of metres, good for stand-up paddleboards and worry-free kid swims.

Overnight is better. But Tofo still works as a marathon day out of Inhambane. The bay bends for kilometres, whale sharks snack just beyond the breakers, and the village turns out the country's finest peri-peri chicken.

The old capital looks paused mid-century, coral-stone mansions tilting over alley-wide lanes. The haul is long. Yet the UNESCO-listed façades and a spice market that still runs on hand-scales justify the dawn start.
